Discernment is a word that appears many times in the Bible. Unless we know what it means it is just another word used to fill in some space. But, when you understand that when you have discernment, you have sharp perceptions and make right judgments. It is a gift of the Holy Spirit given to those who believe in the Son of God, Jesus, and have faith and trust in Him and His Word.
In order to know who your real enemy is you must have discernment. There are many false prophets and teachers who think they are mightier than God. These persons tell you things that you think you want to hear. However, what they tell you is like a new toy that you would give to your child. It entertains them for a while, but soon the newness wears off and you find the toy in the corner and your child is playing with the box. Without discernment this liar of all liars will lead you down the path to eternal destruction.
But, do not fret for “greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world.” (I John 4:4b) If you know God then you can discern your enemy. The problem is we forget to ask God to lead us through the maze of the world. We forget to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 7:7) We forget to pray. (Ephesians 6:18)
When you receive Jesus into your heart, you also are releasing the mighty power of the Holy Spirit who gifts you with many gifts among them is “discernment of spirits.” (I Cor. 7:7-10) If you have a sense that something isn’t quite right, it probably isn’t—back away—test what you are seeing/hearing by asking God and reading His Word. You know what they say, “If it seems too good to be true it probably is.”
The strong man is a wimp in the face of God. Do you remember the story of David and Goliath? (I Samuel 17) The Israelites were in battle with the Philistines. There appeared a giant named Goliath and none of the Israelites felt they could stand up against him, except a young lad named David. David slew Goliath with a sling shot and a stone and finished him off with a sword. Why was David able to do this? David knew his enemy and was able to stand up against him because the power of God was within him.
You, too, can be victorious over whatever giants are before you in your life. Be filled with the Holy Spirit and in God’s time the victory will be yours. Trust in God and lean not on your own understanding. Acknowledge Him in every way and He will direct you on a path that brings you safely Home. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
Dear Lord, help me to know right from wrong and give me the courage to choose the right. In Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN
