Violence Not The Answer

“…no harm will come to you; no plague will come near your tent.” Psalm 91:10

Solomon wrote in Proverbs 12:21—“No disaster overcomes the righteous, but the wicked are full of misery.” In verse 19 Solomon wrote, “Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue only a moment” And, Proverbs 11:30 states, “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, but violence takes lives.”

In our world there is good and there is evil, it has always been so. It is more obvious at certain times, but it is always there. Evil is a coward. When he feels threatened he hides behind a rock until he thinks people have forgotten how they have suffered at his involvement in their lives. Then he attacks! Each time the effects of his violence is a little stronger and more deadly. Then the faithful pray and he runs and hides again.

Today there are those who are so frustrated and impatient that they are responding in violence against their fellow man. This violence is not only hurting those they are attacking, but it is hurting themselves and the cause toward which they are angry. They are allowing the whispers of the Evil One to speak to their hearts. Even so, I hope we can hear Jesus’ words from the cross as they come upon us like rain from the heavens: “Forgive them, Father, for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:32)

Violence does not give you control. Oh, it may seem to for a little while, but ultimately it makes you weak and unable to function. It steals common sense and the ability to think rationally from you. Your heart grows cold. Your mind swirls in a sea of lies told to you by the Evil One. Lies that are never a lasting quality of life.

Listen, instead to the Lord who says, “Vengeance belongs to Me; I will repay. In time their foot will slip, for their day of disaster is near, and their doom is coming quickly.” (Deut. 35:35) “For the Lord has a day of vengeance, a time of paying back for its hostility against [His Word].” (Isaiah 34:8) And, paramount to our situation today, “Friends, do not avenge yourselves; instead leave room for His wrath. For it is written: “Vengeance belongs to Me: “I will repay, says the Lord.” (Romans 12:19) Do not put yourselves in the path of the Lord’s wrath. And finally, “The Lord will judge His people.” (Hebrews 10:30b)

Granted, there is a lot that is not right with the world today. Things may not be as you think they should be. But, listening to God’s Word is the only way to bring peace to yourself and to the nation. The Lord is waiting to show you mercy and He has compassion for whatever situation you may find yourself in. Hear Him saying, “Trust in the Lord and lean not on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5) His promise is, “no plague will come near your tent.” (Psalm 91:10) And, finally, “Call to Me and I will answer you and tell you things you do not know.” (Jeremiah 33:3)

Violence is not the way for there is no love in violence.

Father, help us, this world You have created, to be the people You call us to be. In Jesus’ name I pray Amen
